See below for examples of how Greening Greenfield has received volunteer support already:
Community
Community partners, such as the Center City Resident's Association, the Center City District, the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, the Philadelphia Water Department, and the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, have participated in the planning of this project, which was inspired originally by the Philadelphia School District Campus Parks Initiative. The inclusive, community-building process gained support for the master plan from both the Philadelphia School District and Dr. Ernest Angiolillo (Greenfield's Principal.)
The Greening Greenfield committee is applying to a number of non-profit and corporate foundations for grants at this time. Conestoga Bank, the first corporate sponsor, has awarded Greening Greenfield a $5,000 grant.
Students
Greenfield students took the lead in sponsoring the first phase of this project - the installation of a weather station on the school's roof with computer connections into all of the science rooms and the library - with a penny drive which resulted in the unveiling of the weather station by meteorologist, Glenn Hurricane Schwartz at Greenfield's Earth/Arbor Day Celebration on April 25, 2008.
Students are also taking the initiative in starting a comprehensive recycling program at the school.
Parents and Teachers
A group of parents, teachers, and school administrators, with the help of the Community Design Collaborative and the School District, have developed this plan. The master plan report, completed by the architecture firm, KlingStubbins, under the direction of the Community Design Collaborative, was funded through a service grant from the Collaborative, and resulted in $28,900 of design services being provided to the Greenfield Home and School Association.
The Greenfield Home and School Association held a kick-off fund-raising event to increase community awareness and support for the project on April 10, 2008. $16,464 of seed money was raised to hire a design team to provide design development services. The Home and School Association also made a $500 contribution in 2006 for the application fee for the Community Design Collaborative, and a $500 contribution in 2007 for the printing of presentation materials.
A lecture series on sustainable strategies, development of supplemental curriculum and teacher training, and the physical demonstration and measurement of how the constructed design will affect environmental factors such as storm water run-off, heat island effect, and energy needs are some of the other ways the project is incorporating participation in its mission.
