During 2006-2007, Lisa Armstrong acted as the parent representative of the Home and School Association to the School District of Philadelphia for the Greening Greenfield project. Lisa is a parent of two Greenfield alumni, and a current Greenfield fourth grader. She is a registered architect specializing in the design of community and recreation centers, child care centers, and affordable housing. Lisa organized a number of planning meetings with interested parents and teachers in preparation for developing a proposal to present to the School District of how the school would like to use the grant. Lisa was the client contact for the service grant from the Community Design Collaborative, arranging for the KlingStubbins design team to meet interested parents and teachers, and to interface with the Watershed Coordinator, Mr. Glen Abrams, at the Philadelphia Water Department, and representatives of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Center City District. Pat Toy, president of the Home and School Association, and Lisa presented the conceptual Master Plan to the Board of the Center City Residents Association in the Spring of 2007. The CCRA has identified the enhancement of the Greenfield schoolyard as a green open space accessible after school hours to the community as an important element in their Master Plan for Center City. They have supported the project with articles in their widely distributed newsletter, and have sent E-Mail notices to their members of the project fund-raising efforts. In fall of 2007, armed with endorsement and encouragement from the School District to persevere in figuring out how to see the project to fruition, the Greening Greenfield Committee was formed. Members of the Committee consist of parents of current students, parents of former students, alumni, teachers, and the school principal, Dr. Ernest Angiolillo. The Committee meets monthly to report progress and to plan next steps. The committee consists of a number of sub-committees, each managing a particular piece of this effort. The sub-committees are the web site committee, the events committee, the alumni network committee, the publicity committee, the finance committee, and the grant-writing committee. Brett Webber, AIA, LEED AP, is co-chair of the Greening Greenfield Committee with Lisa Armstrong. Brett is a parent of a Greenfield incoming first-grader, and has his own architecture firm providing commercial and residential architectural design services. Pat Toy is a parent of one Greenfield alumni, and a recently graduated Greenfield eighth grader. She has been a key committee member, coordinating the events and finance sub-committees of the Greening Greenfield Committee. She has served on the Greenfield Home and School Board for ten years. For the first four years she served as chair of the Beautification Committee. As chair she initiated and coordinated the school's annual participation in Martin Luther King Day of Service. She also initiated the school's participation in Philadelphia Cares Day. After chairing the Beautification Committee, Pat initiated the Outreach Committee, formed to better market the school and to hopefully get more neighborhood families to consider sending their children to Greenfield. For the last two years, Pat has served as President of the Greenfield Home and School Association Board, and though her children have graduated from the school, she continues to volunteer in support of the Greening Greenfield project.
